Couples Therapy

Relationships naturally go through periods of stress and transition. When communication becomes difficult or partners begin to feel distant from each other, it can be challenging to find a way forward without support.

Couples often seek therapy when they experience recurring conflict, communication difficulties, emotional distance, or trust concerns. Relationship strain may also emerge during life transitions such as becoming parents, relocation, or work stress, and individual challenges such as anxiety or depression can also affect the relational dynamic.

The aim of couples therapy, sometimes called relationship therapy, is to understand relational patterns and support a more secure and supportive connection.

My Approach: Systemic & Emotionally Focused Therapy

My work with couples is grounded in systemic and family therapy and informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a research-supported approach to relationship therapy. A systemic perspective views relationship difficulties as patterns that develop between partners over time. Therapy focuses on understanding communication styles, expectations, emotional responses, and the influence of family background and life experiences on the relationship.

Emotionally Focused Therapy focuses on the emotional and attachment needs that shape how partners respond to one another. Behind conflict or withdrawal, there are often deeper experiences of vulnerability, fear of disconnection, or a longing for emotional closeness. Through therapy, couples begin to recognize these patterns and develop new ways of responding to one another.

I provide couples therapy in Amsterdam and online for couples living in the Netherlands or internationally.

What Couples Often Gain from Therapy

  • Greater understanding of recurring interaction patterns within the relationship (systemic perspective)
  • Awareness of emotional and attachment needs influencing conflict or withdrawal (EFT)
  • Improved communication and emotional expression
  • More constructive ways of navigating conflict and misunderstandings
  • Insight into how individual challenges such as anxiety, depression, or stress may affect the relationship
  • A stronger sense of emotional safety, connection, and mutual support
